The Newport Jazz Summer Camp at Salve Regina

The Newport Jazz Summer Camp at Salve Regina is an exciting opportunity for high school students to discover the depths of their talent. This year's camp will include performance master classes focusing on jazz theory and improvisation, small ensembles and big band, culminating in a final performance at the Newport Jazz Festival. Students will learn directly from experienced music educators and festival artists, and the camp will conclude with each student performing on stage at the legendary Newport Jazz Festival. The Newport Jazz Summer Camp runs from July 25 - August 2
Location: Angelus Hall, 26 Ochre Point Ave , Newport, RI 02840
Date/Time: Friday, July 25, 2025 - Sunday, August 3, 2025  12:00 PM - 10:00 AM

Tuition is $1,500 for overnight and $850 for commuters. A placement audition recording and full tuition must accompany all applications. Please pay the deposit ($250) at the time of registration.  You will receive a link for the payment of your balance once the registration and audition is complete.  We hope to receive all applications by July 10. Payment plans and financial assistance are available.

Placement auditions can be submitted by emailing a sound file or link to jazzcamp@salve.edu or by sending a digital file by mail to the address listed on the application form. A completed registration form and deposit must accompany all audition recordings.

JAZZ FESTIVAL ATTENDANCE

All campers will have free admission to the Newport Jazz Festival on Friday, August 1, and Saturday, August 2.  Although each camper will be performing on one of those two dates, we will not know the time and exact day each student will perform until the week of camp.  Friday/Saturday ticket packages are available to parents at a discounted price. There is an opportunity to purchase parent ticket packages in the registration form below.

When your registration is complete, you will be asked to fill out some camp forms that include health history, medical exam confirmation, a release form, and a behavior agreement form.  These forms should be submitted in the forms tab.

    Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet, Flute, Clarinet – 

  • Play an etude (jazz or classical) that you have worked on.
  • Perform a jazz selection that includes an improvised solo.
  • Improvise at least three choruses on this Bb blues track: Blues in B Flat
    OR
    Improvise at least three choruses using the Bb blues track at approximately 160bpm on iReal. Additional sources of B Flat Blues Backing Tracks are acceptable

 

Bass – 

Play an etude (jazz or classical) that you have worked on. Perform a jazz selection that includes an improvised solo–it is preferred that you record yourself with a play along (Aebersold, YouTube, or iReal, etc.). Walk at least three choruses of F blues at approximately 160bpm.

 

Drums – 

Play a piece (preferably with a play along) that uses a beat in the Latin style–including bossa, samba, or mozambique, etc. Play a piece (preferably with a play along) that displays your ability to solo in a jazz style. Play at least three choruses of a 12 bar blues at approximately 160bpm in the swing style.

 

Guitar, Piano, and Vibes – 

Play an etude (jazz or classical) that you have worked on. Perform a jazz selection that includes an improvised solo. Improvise at least three choruses on this Bb blues track: Blues in B Flat
OR
Improvise at least three choruses using the Bb blues track at approximately 160bpm on iReal.

 

Voice-

Sing two songs of your choice – one up tempo, one ballad
